Okeanos operates at the intersection of ocean advocacy and hands-on engagement, working with a dedicated team across Germany and Europe. The organisation runs a fleet of seven traditional Polynesian vaka, each based in a different region worldwide and dedicated to a specific mission. For this project, Okeanos provided the boat and crew — a vaka used primarily for educational and outreach purposes, connecting communities with ocean knowledge through direct experience. The research trip was initiated by Green D, a platform rethinking design education through sustainable, systems-based approaches, and brought together seven designers from different disciplines to explore alternative models of learning, collaboration, and ecological practice at sea.
